    Position Description Summary:
Engineers perform a variety of technical support work for the refinery operating units including crude fractionation, reforming, alkylation, hydro treating and other processing units., Technical support also includes evaluation of catalyst and licensing proposals, development of process designs, and startup and turnaround support. Supports the functions and development of the Process Engineering staff.

Principal Accountab
- Performs advanced engineering calculations (i.e., mass balances, energy balances, conversion calculations). Unit simulations, process design calculation, hydraulics, etc.
- Gathers, analyzes, interprets, acts upon and disseminates pertinent unit operations data.
- Generates and maintains an informational database on pertinent process variables.
- Monitors operation of assigned units with goals of optimizing efficiency, product quality and yields.
- Performs daily unit troubleshooting.
- Performs process design and troubleshooting studies to determine feasibility and makes recommendations for enhancement.
- Develops capital improvement projects for units.
- Evaluates chemical and catalyst usage and performance, maintains unit material balances and recommends and evaluated opportunities for profit improvement.
- Participates in the Process Safety Management system by taking lead in unit hazards reviews and the Management of Change System.
- Makes recommendations to improve unit yields and/or optimize energy consumption.
- Ensures that the planning department is aware of current operating constraints.
- Initiate and justifies new projects, additional monitoring and other improvements to the unit.
- Develops project scope for improvement projects.
- Consults with supervisor concerning unusual problems and developments
- Assesses the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering evaluation tests, products, or equipment when necessary data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable.
- Performs as a staff advisor and consultant to a technical specialty, a type of facility or equipment, or a program function.
- Provides daily refinery operations support to ensure safe, reliable and efficient unit operations.
- Interpret, summarize, and present results of data analysis in monitoring operating unit performance, troubleshoot equipment operation, evaluate catalyst performance, recommend operating guidelines and process improvements.
- Act as primary unit contact engineer to operations for assigned areas of the refinery.
- Administer plant performance tests runs as required.
- Participate in conceptual design studies in support of unit re-vamp or de-bottleneck.
- Assist in development of process design packages and perform process design work for engineering design packages. Run models to simulate various processes. Generate heat and material balances and stream data. Develop new designs and/or ratings of major pieces of equipment such as heat exchangers, vessels, distillation columns, etc. Provide follow-up work as needed to support project development and executions. Coordinate work with other departments in the refinery including Mechanical Design and Maintenance.
- Participate in plant shutdown, startup, and turnaround assistance, including equipment process inspections, catalyst loading and sulfiding, start-up, and plant performances test runs.
- Manages consultants
- Mentors other process engineers

Knowledge and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering required. A minimum of seven to ten years experience in petroleum refinery process engineering, operations and maintenance positions required.
- Excellent organization and process design skills required.
- Good communications skills required.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals required.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry required.

- Ability to interact with a variety of experience levels and position types, and wide variety of audiences including management as well as external contacts.
- Ability to express thoughts in a clear concise manner both orally and written.
